History
This landmark fieldstone farm house, in historic Frederick MD, sheltered the Derr family for 5 generations and over 200 years. The house was originally built around 1775 by Sebastian Derr, a wealthy landowner, for his son John, on a 307 acre property he bought from Daniel Dulany in 1755. Sebastian Derr, originally from Bavaria, built this stalwart home amidst the rich farmland between the Monocacy River and Frederick & Woodsboro Pike that he christened “Dearbought”.
Over the years as a family home the house has undergone several building phases, lending the structure a many varied architectural character ranging from German farmhouse, to Federal Manor, To neo-classical style. One of the most remarkable additions was the enormous kitchen with its 10ft wide hearth. This storied home is a registered and cherished Frederick County Landmark.
